Share of voice (SOV) has been a staple of SEO and PR for years. In the AI era it becomes even more useful, because answer engines tend to name a small handful of brands per prompt — so being in or out is very visible.
A simple definition
For a given set of prompts, your SOV is the share of brand mentions that belong to you versus your named competitors. If ten prompts surface twenty brand mentions and four of them are you, your SOV is 20%.
Make it comparable
- Fix the prompt set so week-over-week numbers mean something.
- Include the same competitor set every run.
- Segment by platform — your Perplexity SOV can look very different from ChatGPT.
Turn the number into action
A falling SOV on a specific platform usually points to a content or citation gap a competitor has filled. Track it prompt-by-prompt and you’ll know precisely where to publish next.
